Tumaini Festival 2020 cancelled

The free of charge annual two-day Tumaini Festival which takes place at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District has been cancelled.

Tumaini Festival founder, Menes la Plume, confirmed the development Sunday.

“Yes it’s true, the festival has been cancelled. The decision was made recently and we were just waiting for official announcement,” Menes real name Tresor Mpauni, said.

Menes said the festival will return next year and that it will take place on November 4-7 2021.

Tumaini which means hope, started in 2013 and is the only festival that takes place at a refugee camp.

Since it started, the festival has made strides hosting different acts from different art disciplines and also shifted from a day’s festival to two-day festival.

“It has taken us time from making the decision because we were still monitoring the situation but now we feel we cannot host it. We will come back bigger and better next year,” he said.

Recently Menes also said that festivals have been affected in different ways looking at the financial side.

“Most sponsors have no money to support festivals since their businesses have been affected by the pandemic. Most of the funds are being directed towards Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

The festival was a success last year attracting a huge audience over the two days and some of the artists that performed include Amahoro Dancers, Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera, Princess Chitsulo and Nyago.

Tumaini is among the top six festivals in the country and has joined other festivals like Lake of Stars, Blantyre Arts and Nkhotakota festivals among others, that were cancelled.

Lake of Stars announced its cancellation early this year while Blantyre Arts Festival announced of its cancellation recently due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Another top festival – Sand Music Festival has announced that it would take place in Salima District end next month.

The festival last year clashed with Tumaini happening on the same weekend.
