Two die in Northern Region road accidents

By Samuel Kalimira:

Northern Region police have said two people died in road accidents which occurred on Christmas Day.

In contrast, there was no death caused by road accidents recorded on Christmas Day last year, Northern Region Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Kalaya, said.

He said the two accidents happened in Karonga and Mzimba districts.

He said one person died after being hit by a motor vehicle while chatting along the M1 Road at Enukweni Trading Centre. In Karonga, another person also died after being hit by a vehicle at the Boma.

“It is unfortunate that we did not do well on December 25 because we have lost two lives due to fatal accidents. This is sad because last year we did not lose any life.

“It is sad that the causes of the accidents relate to speeding because drivers failed to control their vehicles,” Kalaya said.

He then advised motorists and pedestrians to observe road signs as the New Year celebrations approach.

Kalaya said the police have intensified road patrols to ensure safety.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to release a comprehensive report of the accidents that happened on Christmas Day across the country.
