By Jameson Chauluka:

Two European Union (EU) election observers for the May 21 Tripartite Elections have been robbed of their personal property and cash in Chikwawa.

The robbers—who were armed with pangas, went away with a laptop, cellphones and K1.3 million cash—attacked Italian Mario Orru, 51, and 40-year-old Slavena Lieva from Bulgaria.

Chikwawa Police spokesperson, Foster Benjamin, said the incident happened at Memories Lodge where the EU team was staying.

“When we were informed of the robbery, we rushed to the place and instituted investigations. We will make sure that the culprits are brought to book,” he said.

Benjamin encouraged anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the culprits to inform the police.

Writing on its official Facebook page, EU Observer Mission says it appreciates the people’s concern and interest in the matter.

“We can confirm that one of our observer teams was the victim of a robbery at their accommodation and some money and personal items were stolen. This happened in the early hours of May 12 in Chikwawa,” the post reads in part.

EU says one of the team members sustained injuries in the process and has been discharged from a hospital where he was receiving treatment.

“The incident is now being handled by the Malawi Police Service which has provided great support to the mission and we are liaising with them closely. Our observation of the elections continues in the same way. We are here in the country to support Malawi at this important time,” the post adds.
