Two people are feared dead and over 20 houses have been torched in Msakanene area of Traditional Authority Mkumbira in Nkhata Bay District following a fight that broke between people of two villages—Msakanene and Mkondezi—in the lakeshore district.
Information from the police indicates that on Monday, people from Msakanene went to Mkondezi to hunt for a suspect who has allegedly been breaking into houses in their village.
The people landed into a wrong suspect and people from Mkondezi ganged up to chase away the group from Msakanene.
“A fight ensued and one person from Mkondezi died upon reaching Nkhata Bay District Hospital,” Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson Kondwani James said.
One of the deceased was identified as Gift Muba from Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District.
Police say in retaliation, a group from Mkondezi went to Msakanene Tuesday where over 20 houses were torched and four people have been seriously injured.
Reports indicated that one of the four died while receiving treatment at Nkhata Bay district hospital and two of the casualties have been taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital for further treatment.
“There are fears that this fight might start again depending on how the other village feels. But as police, we will be there day and night to monitor the situation,” James said.
The Nkhata Bay police spokesperson said no arrest had been made as of yesterday but the tension had been eased.
