Two girls questioned over Simama Hotel fracas

Two girls, who are said to have caused pandemonium at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe on Monday, have been questioned by police following the incident.

The girls, who went to the hotel claiming that their friend was being held, attracted the attention of passers-by and residents of the nearby Mchesi Township.

But Central Region Police spokesperson, Ramsey Mushani, said no girl was in the hotel as claimed by the two girls.

“We received reports that there was a fracas at the hotel which was incited by some girls who said someone told them that their friend was being held in the hotel.

“We asked the girls who told them about that but they were not able to remember the person. But as police, we confirmed that no child was held in the hotel. It was something that was just cooked up,” Mushani said.

He added: “The two girls will be part of our investigations. We would like to get this person who misled them. That person will have to answer the charge of inciting violence.”

According to eyewitnesses, as the mob swelled, they started pelting stones at the hotel.

Hotel officials then alerted the police, who arrived at the premises and dispersed the fast growing mob using teargas.

But that was after the people had damaged one vehicle and broken some of the hotel’s window panes.

Simama Group of Companies Managing Director, Francis Simama, said there was misinformation on what transpired.

“There was a bit of confusion and misinformation. What we know is that at 2pm two young girls made their way to the hotel claiming their friend had walked into the hotel premises. The security personnel was baffled and brought the matter to the attention of the Head of security and General Manager. We at Simama Hotel have a policy of no entry of minors to the hotel premises unsupervised,” Simama said.

He was speaking at a press conference yesterday where the hotel’s General Manager, James Botomani, and Operations Manager, Karel Ludick, were also in attendance.
