Two stampede victims remain in hospital
Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) has said two people remain in the hospital out of the 62 that were involved in the National Bingu Stadium stampede.
The accident that happened on July 6, prior to afternoon independence celebrations, also claimed eight lives, most of them children.
The hospital’s spokesperson Chiyanjano Kazombo Tuesday identified the two as a man and child.
“The man is currently in male ward 1B after sustaining leg fracture while the child is in children’s ward B due to head injuries. They are both in a stable condition,” she said
The stampede prompted President Peter Mutharika on July 10, 2017 to appoint a task force to enquire into the circumstances that led to the death of the children.
The task force, which is chaired by Principal Secretary in the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) responsible for administration Zangazanga Chikhosi was ordered to report back after two weeks with findings and recommendations and measures to be taken to avoid the tragedy to resurface.
Impeccable sources say the commission has completed its investigations and was Tuesday expected to present the report to the Office of President and Cabinet.
When contacted, Chikhosi neither denied nor confirmed the development but said the report will be out soon.
“You just have to wait for the report. We will produce it soon,” he said
The preliminary investigations by police blamed late opening of the gates.
Some section of society, however, faulted the appointment of an all-civil-servant task force, fearing this would compromise the outcome of the investigations.
