The United Democratic Front (UDF) has said preparations for its August 1 convention are on track as Balaka North lawmaker Lucius Banda prepares to challenge Atupele Muluzi for the party’s top job.

UDF secretary general, Kandi Padambo, said three months before the party’s big day at Comesa Hall in Blantyre, his office has not received any reports of hitches.

“The convention’s organising committee, headed by the party’s vice president Charles Chikuwo, [indicates that everything] is on track. So far, my office has not received any report of hitches,” he said.

Popular musician and politician Banda is challenging Muluzi because he says the party leader spearheaded UDF’s working relationship with the ruling party.

If UDF successfully holds the convention, it will join the Malawi Congress Party as one of the few parties that have managed to hold an elective conference. Alliance for Democracy attempted to hold a convention last month but the party’s leadership failed to agree on the issue of delegates.

People’s Party and the Democratic Progressive Party are yet to announce dates for their respective conferences.
