UDF launches 2019 manifesto

United Democratic Front (UDF) has appealed to Malawians to trust the party, saying it has progressive ideas.

UDF president, Atupele Muluzi, said during the launch of the party’s manifesto at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe Sunday that the party would emphasise inclusive growth and governance if voted into power during the May 21 Tripartite Elections.


Muluzi said the party intends to stabilise the economy, develop a social protection system for vulnerable people and ensure that there is good governance and promote transparency and accountability.

Among other things, the party promised that it would increase the pay as you earn tax threshold to K100,000 as well as raise the minimum wage to K2,000 per day.

Muluzi said UDF would see to it that the agriculture sector was improved to make it more productive to compete on the global market.


On education, Muluzi said the UDF has prioritised education for all children, especially girls. The party also said it would abolish quota system of selecting students to public universities. UDF also promised to increase capacity of existing universities so that more students are enrolled.

He also promised to provide free access to healthcare services and develop district hospitals to relieve the pressure off referral hospitals.

Muluzi also said, if voted into power, the UDF would create an enabling environment for the private sector to invest and flourish and create more jobs for the youth.

“Let me assure you that we will make sure that we fulfill our promises of stabilising the economy. We encourage private sector partners to develop small and medium enterprises. We will also make sure that we should have a credible Cabinet that is accountable and delivers to poor Malawians,” he said

He further said the UDF government would emphasise economic prudence and fight corruption.

“We will tackle corruption at the source by strengthening public financial management, procurement auditing systems to ensure resources are used for intended purposes,” he said

The party’s manifesto has been launched under the theme ‘A new beginning’.
