UDF loses business committee seat

MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT — Kazombo

The United Democrat Front (UDF) party has lost a privilege to sit in the Business Committee of Parliament as its numbers in the House have declined after the High Court nullified the Mangochi North East parliamentary election results.

In the 2019 parliamentary election, UDF managed to get 10 seats but following the judgement, the number has been reduced to nine.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Madalitso Kazombo made the announcement on Tuesday.

Last week, the High Court in Blantyre nullified Mangochi North East Constituency 2019 election in which Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) declared UDF’s Idi Kalosi as the winner.

“According to our Parliamentary rules, only a party with 10 or more members is supposed to be represented in the Business Committee. As of now, UDF ceases to be a member of the business committee following the nullification of the Mangochi North East Constituency,” Kazombo said.

In December last year, the High Court also nullified Mangochi West parliamentary election results after being convinced that there were irregularities which undermined the credibility of the polls.
