Divisions in the United Democratic Front (UDF) Central Region committee have taken a new twist, when a faction of the committee, opened a new regional office in Area 24.

For some months there have been two Central Regional governors, each claiming to be legitimate: Martin Matabwa and Dinocius Magombo.

The group led by Magombo, which is supported by the party’s vice president, Iqbal Omar, opened the new office at Area 24 on Monday.

But the other committee, led by Matabwa, has been operating from a motel at Biwi, waiting to open new regional offices along Likuni road.

In an interview during the official opening of the Area 24 office, Omar said all officials in the region were invited to the ceremony.

“I don’t know who has come but everybody was invited. However, we know this is Monday and not all people can be present here. But I am happy that some people are here,” said Omar in an interview, after being asked the whereabouts of other senior party officials in the region.

Magombo, was until the cracks emerged, the party’s Deputy Regional Governor.

UDF Publicity Secretary, Ken Ndanga said the party recognises Matabwa as their regional governor for the Central Region.

“The regional governor for the Central Region is Mr. Matabwa. Anybody who claims to be a regional governor is a confusionist. We will wait for a report from Mr. Matabwa on what is happening in the region,” he said.

He added: “We are not aware of the opening of that office. But let me point out that as long as the office is opened to serve the interest of the party, we have no problems. We just have to wait for the report from the governor on the development.”
