Uganda Cranes Cecafa celebration marred by team bus accident
This year’s CECAFA champions Uganda Cranes have been involved in an accident while travelling from Soroti after meeting President Yoweri Museveni to celebrate their victory according to the country’s leading media outlet The Monitor.
Online reports by The Monitor say five people are said to have been killed and several others seriously injured in the accident. They were rushed to Mbale regional hospital.
The accident happened at Jami in Kamonkoli, Budaka district.
“We got a puncture and the bus lost control. It rammed into a Taxi and a number of people travelling in the taxi are dead. Thank God, we are all fine with minor injuries to Hassan Wasswa Dazo and Denis Okot,” the media outlet quoted a Joseph Ochaya.
According to another eye witness, the speeding team bus had reached Kamonkoli – Jami, along the Mbale – Kampala Highway when it got a puncture before losing control as it rammed into a speeding taxi.
Early indication from the accident say players and officials on board were however safe, apart from four who suffered minor injuries.
Those who suffered minor injuries and given first aid were three players, Denis Okot, Hassan Wasswa Dazo and Kezironi Kizito.
The other injured person is the FUFA communications director, Ahmed Hussein.
The contingent was from Soroti State Lodge where they had traveled to celebrate the recent CECAFA victory with the president of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
A day earlier, the Cranes were treated to a dinner at Entebbe State House where the Vice president, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi represented the number one citizen.
