UGI Wheelchair Basketball impresses

The inaugural United General Insurance (UGI) Wheelchair Basketball League has surpassed expectations, according to the organisers.

The league’s Chairperson, Charles Nyasa, of Kachere Rehabilitation, made the remarks after concluding the finals at Blantyre Youth Centre on Sunday.

Wheel Warriors were crowned champions after defeating Roar Thunders 14-10 in the final whereas in a third-place battle, Zig Zaggers won bronze medal after beating Black Leopards 12-6.

Nyasa said there was an overwhelming response as more players want to join the league.

“This is quite encouraging because we are assured that the numbers of the teams will grow. The league also provided entertainment to the players and spectators,” he said.

Nyasa hailed UGI for bankrolling the league to the tune of K3.5 million.

Warriors Captain, Thokozani Farji, said it was a historical win.

“The league kept us busy and entertained. We also salute UGI for taking interest in the sport,” he said.
