UK-based Malawians to celebrate independence
Malawians based in the United Kingdom are geared to celebrate this year’s independence at Palms Bar, Coventry in the United Kingdom on July 8.
The organisers of the event are calling upon Malawians based in the UK to be part of the celebrations.
According to Harry Chimwele, who owns Africa Coming Up, former Zembani Band songstress Emma Masauko will lead a cast of artists to entertain Malawians who will attend the event. Other artists who are set to perform are Prince Langa, Heavie T and DJ Forbes.
In an interview, Masauko said she was looking forward to interacting with fellow Malawians.
“It will be that time of the year when Malawians should reflect on what the country has achieved since independence. Through this gathering, we would evoke the Malawian spirit and celebrate together,” she said.
Chimwele highlighted the importance of celebrating the day for those who would not have the opportunity to join their families in Malawi.
“We always remember where we are coming from. We are proud to be Malawians and this is a huge opportunity to come together and celebrate as Malawians,” he said.
The event is organised and sponsored by Africa Coming Up and it brings together the best Malawian musicians based in the UK.
Masauko is not new in the music industry. She has not slowed down since relocating to the UK. Her hit song ‘Musausiye’ has been on the charts for many years. Heavie T is also making his presence known internationally and this would be his opportunity to perform before a Malawian audience in the UK.
Langa, who is also Chief Executive Officer for Gla Global Music, has been organising events in the UK including Daughters of Nyasa fundraising and the African Women’s dinner but this time he will wear a different hat to entertain the audience. Manning the decks during the celebrations would be Malawian DJ Forbes based in Manchester.
