UK electrical firm opens branch in Blantyre

A United Kingdom based but Malawian owned electrical firm, JMC Limited, has expanded into Malawi by adding a branch at Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre to its network.

JMC founder James Chitseko unveiled the Malawi establishment in Blantyre on Friday and said apart from offering electrical testing and inspection services, the firm will also work to build capacity among the country’s youths.

“Our role is to test electrical connections for buildings for example offices, apartments or dwelling houses. Apart from that, we also monitor electrical wiring and make recommendations on what should be done. Inspections are supposed to be done frequently. Once a building is old, sometimes there is a need to do a re-wiring,” he said.

And the Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) has said the new firm will help reduce claims made on electrical appliances. According to IIM honorary secretary Cosmas Luwanika, insurance companies pay out huge compensations for electrical appliances that are damaged due to electrical faults.

“This firm will help address challenges that we face as the insurance sector by providing ways of protecting electrical accidents that result in claims.

“Due to increased claims of such accidents, insurance companies are forced to increase their premiums,” said Luwanika.

Blantyre City Council chief fire officer Stanford Nanfuko said electrical fires can be controlled if proper procedures are followed.

“The coming in of JMC will help in the reduction of fire accidents. These fires are avoidable and are a drain on resources. We believe the presence of JMC will change things to the better,” said Nanfuko.
