Premier Bet Malawi, through Premier Projects programme, Monday handed over a basketball court to government at Kamuzu Institute for Sports.

Youths from surrounding areas such as Area 23, 24, Chilinde and Kawale townships will benefit from the facility.

Sports Minister Ulemu Msungama said the facility was a perfect donation in two-fold.

“The facility will help fight unemployment levels in the country as the youth will be able to generate income through various activities, including taking basketball as a career. Besides that, our players and teams will also use it to sharpen their skills, thereby improving the standard of the game,” he said.

Msungama called on companies to emulate Premier Bet’s gesture.

“We appreciate Premier Bet, through Premier Projects, for the wonderful gesture. This is the second time they have constructed a basketball court in Malawi…the facilities will also help our athletes prepare for Region 5 Games,” he said.

Premier Bet Deputy Operations Manager Rami Ramia said sport has the power to change the world.

“Premier Bet projects believe that sport is a crucial platform to help the youth enhance their skills. I am calling on the youth to use this facility as a tool to abstain from immoral behaviour that can spoil their future,” he said.

Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) General Secretary Peter Gomani said construction of the court was timely as the modern court will cater for most youths in Lilongwe.

“This is a timely gift. We have been longing for partners to join us to develop the game from grassroots level. This will go a long way in helping the youth by nurturing and enhancing their talent,” he said.

Meanwhile, Premier Bet has indicated that they will continue giving back to the community and will next year assist netball.
