UN lodges protest over anti-gay tirade in Malawi
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is said to have on Friday urged Malawi to protect gays and lesbians after an opposition party spokesman Ken Msonda described homosexuals as “worse than dogs” and called for them to be killed.
A report posted online by AFP, a French news agency quoted the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) urging the Malawian government to protect people from hatred and violence based on their sexual orientation.
People’s Party spokesman Kenneth Msonda made the anti-gay remarks on Facebook earlier in the month and in subsequent media interviews.
Msonda was subsequently summoned by a magistrate’s court in Blantyre to answer charges inciting others to break the law after two human rights’ organizations complained.
On Thursday Director of Public Prosecution Mary Kachale however requested for a discontinuation of the case before some came before the court.
