Malawi has joined the elite club of the postal world after the Universal Postal Union (UPU) awarded it a Certificate of Recognition.

The specialised United Nations postal body awarded Malawi the certificate at a ceremony that took place in Bern, Switzerland, on October 18 2018.

UPU awarded Malawi the S42 certificate in recognition of the strides the country has made in its National Addressing Project.

Malawi is the only African country to get the recognition this year.

Speaking after receiving the certificate on behalf of Malawi, Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies Principal Secretary, Erica Maganga, said the S42 Standard puts Malawi among the 52 compliant countries out of 192 member countries.

“This will definitely help the postal sector in Malawi to grow and compete at international level as the S42 standard will improve mail delivery times and reduce operating costs for operators,” she said.

Malawi rolled out the National Addressing Project in June 2016.

The project is aimed at giving a physical address to every resident in Malawi through property location, numbering and mapping.

It also involves the development of digitised maps for use in the management of settlements and urban communities.

So far, the pilot project has been finalised in Blantyre and is being rolled out in the cities of Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba.

The Certificate of Recognition is granted when a country has achieved the development and maintenance of an agreed upon address template. The address template represents the internally used and publicly promoted address format.

The S42 Standard is a mailing address standard which UPU developed to benefit postal services for individual countries and international business mailers.

The standard is made up of a generic list of address elements – used in all UPU member countries – and country specific templates that tell users how to transform these address elements into an accurately formatted address.

The result is an address that is recognized, and easily processed, by any S42- compliant postal service.

The benefits of the S42 standard include reduced operating costs, faster mail processing, simplified database management and improved data quality. International business mailers also benefit by getting higher deliverability rates, faster mail delivery, postage savings and improved data quality due to better information from an S42-approved postal service.
