Unbeaten Complex Tigresses maul Thunder Queens

Invincible Complex Tigresses maintained their perfect run in the Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League when they humbled Thunder Queens 46-38 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday.

It was not all rosy for Tigresses who endured a bad start after struggling in defence where Maureen Ngwira was given a rare start.

Her sister, Lauren, was featured in attack as a goal shooter while Sindie Simtowe played at goal attack in absence of Ellen Chibokho who was reportedly in South Africa.

Thunder shooters Sherratie Kaiche and Emily Jere took advantage of Tigresses shaky defence to lead the first quarter 12-11.

Realising danger, Tigresses rested Maureen Ngwira and introduced Florence Chirwa-Chagonapanja. The move brought instant change to the defence as she combined superbly with Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango and Cathy Yikwanga to seal all loopholes.

At half time Tigresses were leading 27-21.

Thunder then made tactical changes resting wing attacker Chikumbutso Banda for wing defender Esther Kayira. The move allowed Pilirani Msukwa to move from wing defence to centre court to combine with Thandie Galeta.

But their partnership failed to unsettle Tigresses centre court players Licy Akidu-Fiwa and Rose Saili. Tigresses led the third quarter 38-29.

Tigresses are topping the table with 33 points from 11 games while Thunder have 30 points from 12 games.

Tigresses’ assistant coach Charles Mhango said it was an important win in their quest to reclaim the title.

“Of course we started badly. However, we were not worried because we knew our game plan. It is good that we are done with Thunder,” he said.

In other matches, defending champions Diamonds beat Shizaella 77- 11. Diamonds have 30 points from 11 games. They lost once this season to Tigresses in the first round.

Zomba Airwing won two games when they beat Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters 43-25, and Chilomoni Sisters 50-30.

Prison Sisters also won two games after beating Chilomoni Sisters 65-12 and Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters 65-12.
