Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has lost patience with Ku Chawe Mountain Race sponsor, Sunbird Tourism, for being non-committal on this year’s competition.
The association is contemplating hunting for another sponsor for the Zomba race, AAM General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, has said.
He said the athletics’ fraternity has waited for over two months for the sponsorship.
“We have been talking [to Sunbird] for quite some time but things seem not to be working. Ku Chawe Mountain Race is an important activity on our calendar and we cannot miss it.
“We have been banking on Sunbird because they promised to come back when they sponsored us last year,” Chitembeya said.
Nonetheless, Chitembeya commended Sunbird for bankrolling the race last year when athletes received good prizes, such as K300,000, plus accommodation and food at the company’s hotels.
“Things may not have worked this year, but we will, forever, be grateful to Sunbird for the support they gave us for many years. They helped us produce great runners through this competition,” he said.
Sunbird Marketing Manager, Levi Nkunika, was unable to comment when contacted on Monday, saying he was pre-occupied.
Harry Sichali and Tereza Master won the championship for the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively, during last year’s 21 kilometres race.
