Opening of local airports for international commercial flights remains uncertain despite a recommendation from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19, the ministry and other stakeholders last week resolved that the country needs to continue monitoring situation in other countries before re-opening the airports.

Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 Chairperson, Dr. John Phuka, said time of the airports reopening remains unclear.

“We considered it but people are saying that towards the end of next month things may normalise,” Phuka said.

Phuka said the taskforce is still assessing the situations in other countries where the flights operate before opening the airports.

Speaking in a separate interview, Ministry of Transport spokesperson, James Chakwela, a verdict would be made soon.

“The matter is still being discussed and the ministry and other stakeholders will have to agree on protocols,” Chakwela explained.

The government ordered a halt to flights coming in or going out of Malawi on April 1 as a measure to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
