Uncertanity over Wabam elections

Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wabam) is treading cautiously in its quest to hold regional polls amid coronavirus fears.

Wabam president, Arox Kamng’ona, said the association is strategising on how best to handle regional polls to avoid endangering lives.

“As per constitution, we are supposed to hold elections for our regional affiliates. However, we cannot rush to hold them without proper planning. As you are aware, Covid-19 has disturbed all sectors of life and it is necessary that we take the right precautionary steps,” he said.

Kamng’ona said should the elections be held before the government uplifts its ban on public gatherings, then the body will follow proper health guidelines.

“This includes restricting members to not more than 100 per gathering,” he said.

Recently, Wabam introduced affiliation fee for individuals and clubs wishing to be registered with the body.

Individual athletes wishing to be affiliated with the body must pay K12,000 registration fee annually, while clubs are supposed to pay K20,000 annual fee.

Kamng’ona said introduction of the registration fee was meant to bring sanity to the sport.

“There were some issues which required review to develop the sport. We are setting clubs and regional committees to easily manage the sport. The registration fee is for members to have our backing and enjoy the programmes which we will line up,” he said.
