Malawi under-20 women’s national football team coach, Maggie Chombo- Sadik has named a 40 member squad which went into camp Tuesday.
The team will start training today in preparation for preliminary round of World Cup qualifiers game against Zimbabwe set for Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on January 17.
Chombo has only maintained nine players from the squad that took part in Region Five Games in Botswana in 2018. The Blantyre Zero founder said she anticipates good preparations for the competition.
“We are racing against time so we need to maximise the period which we have. Every team wants friendly matches to gauge their strength. In our case we will improvise,” Chombo-Sadik said.
Winner of Malawi and Zimbabwe will face the winner between Burundi and Ethiopia in the second round of the qualifiers.
The senior women’s team performed poorly in the 2020 Olympics qualifiers and 2019 Cosafa Cup assignments and this led to the firing of the then coach Abel Mkandawire. The full squad is as follows:
