Malawi under-20 national football team Coach, Gerald Phiri Senior, faces players’ selection headache ahead of the Cosafa under-20 championship scheduled for Zambia from December 6 to 16.

Phiri Wednesday said he was happy with how his charges were performing in training.

He admitted that it would be difficult to pick the final squad from the pool of talented players such as Peter Banda, Patrick Phiri, Levison Maganizo,Kondwani Mwaila, Hadji Wali , Mike Mkwate and Abel Mwakilama.

“The boys are fighting for a place in the final squad and the most important thing is that 12 players [in the squad] were part of team that went to South Africa last year [for a similar tournament].

“We have been told to select 20 players and currently, we have 27 in the camps. So it would be difficult for the technical team [to select the best], but we have no choice. We have to trim the squad to 20,” Phiri said.

He said they have been playing strength-testing matches against Be Forward Wanderers [on Tuesday] and Nyasa Big Bullets [today] to fine-tune for the Zambia event.

On Tuesday, Peter Banda, Mike Mkwate, Levison Maganizo and Patrick Phiri scored for the under-20 side when they beat Wanderers 4-1.

Mike Kaziputa scored Wanderers’ consolation goal.

Last year, the under-20 side failed to score in four matches at the Cosafa cup.
