Unheralded Chimwemwe Matemba lifts Nico General ballpool

Unheralded golfer, Chimwemwe Matemba, stunned fellow golfers when he won the Nico General ballpool tournament at Blantyre Sports Club on Wednesday.

Matemba, playing of handicap 24, scored 22 points and was counted in to finish above second-placed Webster Kaunga and John Mhango.

Kaunda, playing of handicap 13, was counted out to finish second whereas Mhango was also counted out to end on third position.

The three golfers tied on points but were only separated by their handicap.

“I have been playing golf for almost two years but this is the first time I have won. I was calm and consistent throughout,” he said.

In the ladies category, Connie Karuku, playing of handicap 15, scored 21 points to emerge winner.

Roza Mbilizi, playing of handicap 10, scored 20 points and was counted in to finish second.

Third position went to Bose Kamphulusa, who, playing of handicap 27, scored 20 points and was counted out.

In subsidiary prizes, Karuku hit the longest drive on hole 13 for ladies whereas Gift Gondwe did it on hole 17 in the men’s section.

Blantyre Sports Club Golf Captain, Sam Mwale, won the nearest to the pin on hole 12.

The men’s and ladies’ winner each received a Puma Golf bag and travel and golfers’ policy that covers up to K730 million on medical expenses.

Nico General Chief Executive Officer, Donbell Mandala, said the company had invested $500,000 in online technology.

“We believe in delivering services in the most effective manner. We want our clients with smartphones to link up with us so that they buy and renew policies online as well as launch claims online. We want to make life easy for them,” he said.
