University of Lilongwe Arkangels Basketball Club on Saturday had Gala Night Awards at New Dawn Lodge, where they decorated outstanding individuals.
This was the first time for the team to recognise outstanding performance after a successful campaign in 2021.
During the event, Sharati Kaiche was the biggest winner after scooping three awards. She won the players’ player of the year award, the most defensive player and rebounder of the year awards.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Petra Mukondo whereas Kimberly Malembo won two awards, namely the most offensive player and the chairperson’s award.
Assist leader award went to Mary Nyirenda whereas Esnart Kabaghe won the rookie of the year award. Nomsa Dzobo was named as the most improved player whereas Sandra Mkandawire won the most supportive player award.
Elnes Kachama was named as the most disciplined player and team leader of the year whereas Lisungu Banda won the coach of the year award.
All the winners went home with miniatures.
Arkangels were crowned Cezobal champions after ending Bravehearts Ladies’ and Lady Dynamites’ dominance.
Banda said the players deserved recognition for showing great character throughout the season.
“The road to victory was a miracle. We thank God. The players had courage throughout the season. The war has just started and there is no need to relax,” Banda said.
During the ceremony, the team also bade farewell to chairperson Isaac Chimwala, who relinquished his post after he was elected as Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary.
Chimwala said the 2021 season was a success.
“Nobody gave us a chance but we defied all odds to win the Cezobal championship. We did a good job to build strong women’s basketball team,” Chimwala said.
Basketball Association of Malawi General Secretary Peter Gomani hailed the team for awarding individuals.
“This is a motivation to the players. I hope the team will show hunger and determination to defend the championship,” Gomani said.
