Unima students call off protests

University of Malawi (Unima) students Monday called off planned protests after the Malawi Police Service, through Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Region Violet Magwaya, reached out to them.

In a letter to the Unima students body which The Daily Times has seen, Magwaya says they will look into some of the things that law enforcers and the students did in Friday’s protests.

Magwaya also says the law enforcers value citizens’ right to education and that there is a need for students and police to be working hand-in-hand so that Malawi can continue to enjoy peace and prosperity.

Unima students president Charles Dokera Thole welcomed the development.

Unima students, under the banner ‘Concerned Unima Students’, staged demonstrations last Friday over what they call an unfavourable academic calendar and delivered their petition to the Zomba District Commissioner
