United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Maria Jose Torres, said on Saturday, art plays a crucial role in disseminating key messages to the masses hence partnering Lake of Stars (LoS) Festival which this year was held at Kachere Kastle in Nkhata Bay over the weekend.

She observed that art is key in that it was a convener where issues get to be discussed easily.

“Art simplifies messages which are difficult,” she said.

Torres, who had time to enjoy some of the performances during the three-day festival which ended on Sunday, said this year, Lake of Stars happens at a time the Climate Change Action Summit is taking place in Europe where all leaders are trying to find solutions to make the planet better.

“Malawi has a young population, so we felt partnering Lake of Stars Festival was a great opportunity to engage young voices to talk about how to fight climate change in the country and make a difference,” the UN Resident Coordinator said.

He also said they were looking at responsible behaviours that count in terms of health and stopping violence against women.

“There were plenty of reasons but the most important thing is to underline the importance of young people in bringing about change, they are creators of a better future,” Torres said.

She said she was impressed with the performances but also the programmes attached to climate change where artists took time out to sensitise people about protecting the environment.

“There are several projects that are being done, for instance, ArtGlo is a group of artists who have been working with the community, they have among others, done open conversation of what climate change is all about as part of creating awareness,” Torres said.
