University Student in for murder
Police in Mangochi have arrested a fourth year Bachelor of Engineering Student at the Catholic Church affiliated DMI University for allegedly killing a villager due to a wrangle over a stolen laptop computer.
The University has since been closed down, indefinitely, to allow for a cooling-off period.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Roderick Maida has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as 33 year old Bizwick Jumbe of Buluzi Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Makwangwala in Ntcheu District.
Maida explained that late last year, the suspect was robbed of his laptop computer by one of the villagers around the school, but the computer was later recovered and handed over to the owner.
“Despite the recovery of the laptop, the matter was also reported to police and the person who was suspected to have stolen it fled for fear of being arrested. However, Jumbe had been going to the house of the person asking if he is back,” said Maida.
He added that on Saturday night, Jumbe went again to the house of the person who stole his laptop. He, however, met the sister to the suspected thief who told him that the man he was looking for was still at large.
“This is reported to have not pleased Jumbe who started beating the sister to the suspected thief. A passerby wanted to separate the two but Jumbe turned on him, accusing him of being part of the people shielding the suspect who is at large. He beat the man until he fainted,” said the Police PRO.
According to Maida, some well wishers took the man, 28 year old Issah Jonasi of Chiwaula Village, TA Chimwala in Mangochi, to a nearby clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police have since indicated that Jumbe will be charged with murder which is contrary to section 301 of the penal code.
