Unlicensed driver kills 2 children, destroys a house
Two children were killed Monday evening in a road accident in Chibavi Township in Mzuzu after a driver of a vehicle lost control ending up hitting an electric pole, a house and the children who were playing along the road side.
The vehicle also swerved into a nearby house destroying part of the wall of the bedroom in the process. An angry mob immediately cannibalized the car.
Mzuzu Police spokesperson Martin Bwanali said the driver has been arrested. He said the driver who had no licence was driving an uninsured car and that he was also escaping from police arrest from another accident where he did not stop.
“The driver, Wyson Mwiba, was travelling from Mchengautuwa Township to Chibavi in a station wagon jeep registration number CP 4358 and he was over speeding. Upon arrival at Kasonga area he lost control of the vehicle and hit a pole and the children who were playing near the road side. The children died on the spot. One was one year old while the other nine years. The driver had no licence. He was a learner. The vehicle was not insured and it belongs to his cousin. It was his second time to drive a car,” said Bwanali yesterday.
He said police were still investigating reports that the driver had hit another vehicle before the other accident and that he was trying to escape from the earlier offence.
Mwiba, 24, comes from Katobo Village, T/A Mwenemisuku in Chitipa.
