Unlicensed matchmaker warns local boxers

Unlicensed Matchmaker, Steve Mawenzi Msiska, has warned local boxers to prove their prowess and credentials on the domestic scene before vying for international title fights.

Msiska said most local boxers were struggling at the international scene because they were immature.

“A boxer needs to have a good record at amateur level. Of course there are some exceptional cases where amateur records do not really matter. But in this case we need a strong base from amateur category.

“Then the boxer must also have an impressive professional record locally before attempting international fights. Failing which, our boxers will continue to struggle locally,” he said.

Msiska said he would be considering a number of factors before selecting a boxer to vie for international title fights.

“Of course international fights are good because they provide exposure but we need to tread carefully to avoid being used. We should not take part in international fights at the expense of our records,” he said.

Msiska has international links with several bodies and he is well remembered for having brokered eight international title fights.

The former Ngumi Boxing Promotions owner arranged Universal Boxing Organisation title fights for Wellingtone Balakasi, Osgood Kayuni and Alick Mwenda.

Balakasi and Kayuni faced Tanzanian Allan Kamote at different intervals whereas Mwenda dated Ali Baba for similar UBO middleweight fight.

Msiska also brokered International Boxing Federation-Africa title fight between Chimwemwe Chiotcha and Tanzanian Francis Cheka. He also arranged IBF-Africa title fight which Wilson Masamba lost to Namibia’s Jeremiah Nakathila, in the first minute of the first round.

Kayuni also benefited from Msiska when he arranged another UBO fight against Solomon Bogere in Uganda.

Agnes Mtimaukanena-Mwando was the first beneficiary after Msiska arranged the World Boxing Forum welterweight fight against Kenyan Susan Andeso.

Recently, Moliyati lost to Cosmas Cheka in an UBO lightweight which Msiska also brokered.
