Unrest at Premier Bet Wizards
Days after some Premier Bet Wizards players expressed their anger with the team’s Technical Director, Peter Mponda, over unpaid perks, the TNM Super League club’s assistant coaches have also thrown in the towel.
Assistant Coach McDonald Yobe and Team Manager, Fundi Akidu, Mponda’s former team mates at Nyasa Big Bullets, have quit over unpaid allowances.
Malawi News has established that Yobe and Akidu have not been receiving their monthly allowances for some months.
Some reports also indicate that the former Flames team mates are not happy with the way the team is being run.
In separate interviews on Thursday, Yobe and Akidu confirmed to have “issues” with the club.
“Yes, Macdonald and I have parted ways with the club. Personally, I feel that I have to try something new. Of course, the issue of allowances is there but the main reason is that I want to do something on my own,” Akidu said.
“It have had a tough time since joining the club and I think it is time for me to go. But I will make a return to football soon.”
After earlier promising to grant Malawi News an interview, Yobe yesterday reserved his comment.
When contacted, Mponda cut off the line after the reporter introduced himself and the issue.
“Let me move to a quieter place. I will get back to you,” he said, but kept on cutting the line whenever the reporter called again.
Mponda roped in Akidu and Yobe into his Wizards’ technical panel in June 2015 after the team had secured sponsorship from Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (Fisd).
During the week, players also complained over unpaid dues and also how Mponda is running the team.
Last week, Mponda challenged that players were free to leave the team which evolved from the now defunct Surestream Academy.
