Malawi National Football Team goalkeeper Charles Thom had a rare opportunity to interact with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after the two sides’ Africa Cup of Nations Group B match in Cameroon on Tuesday.
Mendy was named Best Fifa Men’s Goalkeeper for the year 2021 after fantastic performances for his English Premiership side Chelsea with which he won the Uefa Champions League.
The Senegalese star was also named Uefa’s best custodian for the 2020-21 season.
Thom said it was exciting to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Mendy.
“He congratulated and encouraged me. He told me to work extra hard. It was a brief interaction. We did not have a lot of time to talk,” he said.
The Silver Strikers custodian expressed delight at earning the Man-of-the Match accolade in his senior debut.
“Playing against an experienced side like Senegal was not easy. I thank my teammates for their collective efforts that enabled me to win this prestigious award. We worked extra hard as a team to get the point against Africa’s best team,” he said.
