Urban Music People comes up with Best of the Decades

Organisers of the Urban Music People (UMP) have released a list of the Best of the Decade honours.

The official results of the Best of the Decade honours, follows consultations they made with several players in the creative industry.

One of the directors and founders of UMP, Ken Zizwa, said they decided to come up with the UMP Best of the Decade honours as part of celebrating their 10th anniversary.

“Having entered 2020 and a new decade, and on UMP’s 10th anniversary, we thought of looking back at the most successful 10 years of Malawi urban music and culture honouring the best in several categories,” Zizwa said.

The Best of Decades honours also follows the 2019 UMP Blended Edition held in Blantyre recently which saw them decorating players in music, fashion and media.

The 2019 Blended Edition saw musician Wikise dominating the proceedings in the music category scooping Artist of the Year and Song of the Year awards out of the three nominations that he received.

The list of the decade honours has close to 27 categories.

According to the list, some of the names include Piksy (Artist of the Decade – Male), Sangie (Artist of the Decade – Female), Gwamba (Hip Hop Act of the Decade), Mafunyeta ( Dancehall Act of the Decade), Lulu (Dancehall Act of the Decade), DJ Sley (Producer of the Decade), Udalire by Maskal (Song of the Decade), Nthawi by Maskal (Album of the Decade), Wa CV by Maskal and Piksy ( Collaboration of the Decade) and Black Missionaries ( Band of the Decade).

The other categories are Sukez (Video Director of the Decade), Chipapapa by Tay Grin (Music Video of the Decade), Daredevilz (Duo/Group of the Decade), Faith Mussa (Live Act of the Decade) and Lawi (Afro-soul Act of the Decade).

Zizwa said the decades honours were consistent with their mission to recognise and promote excellence in the local urban industry.
