The United States (US) Embassy is on course to finding a new home in Malawi following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement that will facilitate the acquisition of property on which to build a new U.S. Embassy compound on Presidential Road in Lilongwe.
Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Malawi, Edward Monster, indicates in a statement released this week that the move is one way of strengthening the partnership between Malawi and the US.
In the statement, US Ambassador to Malawi, Virginia Palmer, is quoted as lauding the development.
Palmer, who made the announcement that the ground has been cleared for her government to found a new home in Malawi, indicates that the current chancery of the US embassy was built a long time ago.
The US Ambassador says the Memorandum of Agreement signed between Malawi and the US means all is set for the acquisition of land on which to build the embassy in Lilongwe.
“The United States has been a steadfast partner in Malawi’s development since independence in 1964. I am delighted that my government has committed to building a new US Embassy in Lilongwe as a very physical demonstration of our ongoing commitment to our partnership with Malawi.
“The current US Embassy chancery, built in the early 1970s, no longer provides adequate space for our expanding work in Malawi. We hope the new, state-of-the-art US Embassy compound will be ready for occupancy early in the next decade,” Palmer is quoted as saying.
International cooperation is one of the pillars of President Peter Mutharika’s administration, with Mutharika indicating on several occasions that there is need for mutual cooperation between Malawi and its partners.
