Vale bemoans vandalism

Representatives of Vale Logistics Limited (VLL) have indicated that their haulage operations under Cear are 38 percent less than projected owing to theft and vandalism of their infrastructures.

This came out during the company’s stakeholders meeting on Tuesday in Blantyre.

VLL and Cear Executive Director, Gustav Stein, said despite the slowing of business due to the vice, they remain committed to ensure safety of its workers and communities along the railway lines.

“We are doing everything in line with the agreement that we have with the government in social services such as good community relations and construction of healthy centres because we want to minimise the impact of our services on the community,” Stein said.

He said currently, the company is rehabilitating railway stations that were not in good condition and expects to complete the works by 2022.

Minister of Homeland Security, Nicholas Dausi, who was the guest of honour at the meeting, told the company that it has not delivered in most social aspects of their agreement.

“We want Vale to take their social responsibility seriously, they must help us to build schools, good shelter and create good working conditions for their employees among the various promises they made,” Dausi said.
