Veteran Mzuzu musician turns gospel

mandaVeteran Mzuzu–based musician Victor Godfrey Manda has joined a number of local artists who have dumped secular music for gospel saying he is now a born again christian.

The 70-year old musician said having been in secular for years, he feels it is now time to sing for the Lord.

The former Barclays Bank now National Bank of Malawi employee started music in 1960.

He is the founder of Nyika Sounds Band.

Born in 1946, Manda who is also a former student of Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) plays almost every instrument.

Manda famed for the Tonga song ‘Kadendi Kanyoli Kanowe Msuni’, said all the old wine is gone and that he has now turned gospel.

“I am a member of the Redemption Choir at St. Andrews in the Church of Central Africa n Presbyterian (CCAP) and having entertained people with my band during weddings for years, I think I have done enough.

Now I am a born again and I am committed to serving God,” said Manda.

He said he has stopped singing secular music and that he has also resigned from the band.

‘Kadendi Kanyoli kanowe ndi Msuni,’ was one of his first five songs that enjoyed airplay on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

The musician said he is currently composing the gospel songs and that he will have them ready by the end of the year.
