VICE President Saulos Chilima has encouraged Malawians to opt for home grown solutions to become self-reliant in order to develop the country.
Chilima was speaking yesterday during the launch of a strategic plan by the Catholic Diocese of Zomba held at Zomba Cathedral. Chilima cited countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Dubai in particular, as an example of how strategic road maps can transform organisations or countries.
“Dubai transformed itself from a desert to a well developed nation on the global stage in just 40 years. The United Arab Emirates has generated ideas and is implementing them. Some of the ideas have been packaged in a strategy they call Vision 2021,” he said.
Among other issues Chilima said Dubai’s vision is to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week – like an airline available around the clock to the citizens. Extending business hours is talk at the moment in the country whereby business operators trade between 8 o’clock in the morning and 5 o’clock in the evening a development criticised by most consumers.
“Why am I sharing all this? First, is to encourage you as a diocese that the step you have taken is the right way to go. Second, is to give you a larger picture that the same attitude of finding home grown solutions to achieve self-reliance through commitment and right policies, as a diocese we can also achieve what others have managed to achieve,” Chilima said.
He also said as the diocese becomes self-reliant, part of Malawi has also become self-reliant and hence other institutions would follow to make Malawi self- reliant.
“I do believe that Malawi has the potential to gain a global edge one day. What we need is to work together to gain the extra momentum that is invaluable for the successful realisation of our plans as a country,” he said.
The strategic plan is aimed at making Zomba Catholic Church Diocese attain the desired economic change through self-reliance at all levels by 2021.
