Vice-President off to Durban

Vice-President Saulos Chilima is expected to leave the country for Durban, South Africa Friday, to take part in the 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour.
The conference is scheduled for Sunday, May 15, 2022, to Friday, May 20 2022.
“The Vice President has been delegated by His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, to attend the Conference scheduled for Sunday 15th May to Friday 20th May, 2022. At the opening ceremony on Sunday 15th May 2022, the Vice President will – on behalf of His Excellency President Dr. Chakwera – deliver a statement,” reads the statement dated May 12, 2022.
In the statement, Director of Communications and Public Relations in the Office of the Vice-President, Pilirani Phiri, pointed that the conference has been organised against the backdrop of concerns raised by a 2021 global report on child labour which shows that the number of children involved in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide, representing an increase of 8.4 million children from 2017.
