Victor Kachepatsonga defends Airtel Golf Championship

Renowned golfer, Victor Kachepatsonga, had all the reasons to walk tall in the streets of Lilongwe after emerging as champion of Airtel Malawi Open Golf Championship for a second consecutive year.

The competition took place at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) from Friday to Sunday.

Playing off handicap two, Kachepatsonga put a spirited performance to beat 150 prominent golfers from all golf clubs across the country.

The former Malawi National Golf Team captain amassed 222 gross.

Another seasoned golfer, Sean Raman, also had a good day when he finished second with 232 gross followed by Paul Chidale on 234 gross.

The three-day tournament was organised in a special way this year as Airtel Malawi sponsored four Ball-pool events at the same venue.

“I was composed throughout the competition. It feels great to defend the title. I played some good round of golf,” Kachepatsonga said.

In A Division, John Msonthi Jnr emerged the winner followed by Charles Mvula and Thakor Sanjay on second and third positions, respectively.

In the B Division, Shepherd Tembo was the champion whereas Davie Kalenzi came second. Mike Kalulu finished third.

In the ladies’ category, Marrie Lee Cho finished as the champion with 43 points followed by Susan Makin on 40 points.

All the winners received fabulous prizes, courtesy of Airtel Malawi.

Speaking during the prize presentation, Airtel Malawi’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, described the competition as a success.

“We received an overwhelming response from the golfers. The tournament was really exciting and entertaining,” Kamoto said.

LGC’s Captain, Brian Coombes, hailed Airtel for sponsoring the tournament.

Airtel Malawi also donated a lawn mower worth K500, 000 to LGC.
