Vincent Wandale receives grand welcome
The self-acclaimed leader of Peoples Land Organisation (PLO), Vincent Wandale, Thursday received a warm welcome during his first visit to Thyolo District since his arrest in October last year.
People of Thyolo District sang praise songs to express their happiness at their re-union with Wandale.
The PLO leader paid a visit to members of the grouping to discuss matters that concern their activities and mingle with followers after undergoing treatment at Zomba Mental Hospital.
During his visit, women ululated and sang songs of joy.
“Tamva uthenga akubwera, akubwerawo ndi ndani?/ Wandalee eeeh! Wandalee eeeh!/ Tonse chisangalalo [We have heard that he is coming/ who could that be/ Wandale our leader, let’s be joyful]’
PLO Secretary General, Precious Lester, said the group missed their leader, saying they still regard him as their leader in spite of his arrest and treatment.
“This crowd is a testimony that our leader, Vincent Wandale, is a man loved by his people. We know he was receiving treatment for mental illness but we are convinced that he is fine and we are all happy to have him here. PLO is a movement that will continue and we are behind our leader come rain come shine,” Lester said.
One of the women that attended the event, Jean Phiri, said she missed Wandale.
“I am very happy to see Wandale today. I thought he would never come back. We were all worried with his arrest but today is a good day for all of us,” Phiri said.
Wandale was arrested in October following President Peter Mutharika’s statement that he was spreading false rumours.
The Zomba Magistrates’ Court gave him bail this week.
