Visual Arts catalogue out
A visual artists catalogue which was printed in Italy and carries works from the country’s visual artists is out.
The catalogue was printed in Italy by an Italian organisation known as Imago Mundi.
Blantyre Arts Festival (BAF) coordinated the project where Visual Arts Association of Malawi (Vaam) participated in the project showcasing their works.
Speaking on Friday at Blantyre City Council (BCC) Civic Centre, BAF Executive Director Thom Chibambo said during the presentation of the catalogues to the artists who participated that they were happy that the catalogue is out.
“We are excited that the catalogue is finally out. We would like to thank VAAM for providing their works in the catalogue and this is part of preserving the works but also taking them far,” said Chibambo.
He also hailed Imago Mundi for producing the catalogue saying through it visual artists from Malawi will be exposed.
Several visual artists participated in the project and many said they were excited that their works were in a catalogue something which will help to expose their works to many places.
Councillor Mike Mambo presided over the presentation ceremony. Other people who were present included Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) President Sambalikagwa Mvona and BAF board chairperson Alfred Msadala.
Mvona said as Mawu, they were excited with the development but asked BAF and those involved in the project to work on reproducing more copies of the catalogue which could be sold.
Chibambo said they would look into the issue but said consultations needed to be made before looking into the issue of reproduction.
Meanwhile VAAM will on Friday hold an extra-ordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) where among others they are also expected to elect a new executive.
VAAM Southern Region Chairperson Peter Chikondi confirmed the development saying this is an extra-ordinary annual general meeting which has come following problems in the association.
“This is an extra-ordinary Annual General Meeting which has come up due to a leadership crisis. So during the meeting we will have elections of the national executive,” he said.
The veteran visual artist said the term for the current national executive was expected to end in August this year but they had to go ahead because of the current situation.
Chikondi is one of those people who will be contesting for the seat of presidency following his nomination by members in the Southern region.
The current national executive is being headed by Chrisford Chayera, who served first term before being re-elected.
However, efforts to talk to Chayera proved futile yesterday.
VAAM took advantage of the presentation of the catalogue to announce the news of the extra-ordinary AGM which is set to be held at Grace Bandawe in Blantyre.
