Vitumbiko Kumwenda cherishes back-to-back awards

Mighty Wanderers sensational midfielder Vitumbiko Kumwenda has described winning back-to-back Old Mutual Man-of-the-Match awards in the TNM Super League as a stepping stone to establishing himself as a top player in the country.

Kumwenda was named the best performer on Wednesday when Wanderers thrashed Ntopwa FC 4-1 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to become the first player to win back-to-back Man-of-the-Match awards since the start of the 2020/21 season.

The development came barely three days after Kumwenda received the same award after helping the Nomads to a 3-0 thumping of Chitipa United on Saturday at the same venue.

The former Blue Eagles attacking midfielder said he was working hard to help Wanderers win matches after starting the season on a slow note.

“I am a very happy man. Winning back-to-back Man-of-the-Match awards is no mean achievement. I do not take this for granted. It is something that has excited me quite a lot. I am happy that my performance keeps improving with each and every game.

“I had a mission when I came to Wanderers last year and I am happy that things are working out. I can confidently say that my game has improved quite a lot since moving to Wanderers. My ultimate goal right now is to help my club win matches,” Kumwenda said.

Team Manager for Malawi under-17 National Football Team Enos Chatama said Kumwenda’s current performance is good enough to earn him a call-up to the senior national football team.

“I have watched Kumwenda in several matches and he is such an impressive player. He is a complete player and will go far with his game should he remain level-headed. I watched him when Wanderers played their last two matches and I was convinced that he is a good player. It is good that coach Meck Mwase called him when the Flames were preparing for the recent Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] qualifiers against South Sudan and Uganda.

“Obviously, there must have been stiff competition for places in the team and he did not make the final squad. But I remain optimistic that, this time around, Mwase will try him, especially in the Cosafa Cup tournament,” Chatama said.

Kumwenda joined Wanderers from Eagles on a controversial long drawn out transfer deal.

The deal was dramatic as it went as far as Football Association of Malawi, who ruled that he return to Eagles after resigning to join the Lali Lubani Road side.

The country’s football governing body advised all concerned parties to follow proper procedures.

Eagles then sold Kumwenda to Silver Strikers but the star declined the move, opting for Wanderers instead.
