Attacking midfielder Vitumbiko Kumwenda has said he will honour the remainder of his contract with Blue Eagles.

Kumwenda’s contract with Eagles is set to expire in December this year.

The player reportedly signed a three-year contract with Be Forward Wanderers but the transaction was nullified by Football Association of Malawi (Fam).

Kumwenda’s representative, Amakhosi Jele, confirmed that his client would remain at Eagles until December.

“We have exhausted all avenues to have the player released from Eagles but the club remains unwilling. So we have resolved that the player should honour his contract,” Jele said.

He said Kumwenda would sign a pre-contract with Wanderers as he continues playing for the policemen.

“Vitumbiko’s dream is to play for Wanderers but we respect that he has a contract with Eagles. Our plan is to start negotiating with Wanderers so that he signs a pre-contract to allow him join them at the end of his contract in December,” Jele said.

Fifa rules allow a player to sign a pre-contract with another team in the last six months of his contract.

However, with the suspension of football due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Fam advised clubs and players to discuss the way forward.

Fam nullified Kumwenda’s move to Wanderers in April and ordered the two clubs to negotiate a transfer fee.

Eagles Chairperson, Alexander Ngwala, said the issue was water under the bridge.

“Vitumbiko is our player and we expect him to continue playing for us once football resumes,” Ngwala said.

Kumwenda joined Eagles from Mzimba-based side Kabwafu FC and helped Eagles to win the 2018 Airtel Top 8 Cup after beating Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

He also helped the cops to lift the Fisd Challenge Cup last season before registering more success in the Bingu Ikhome Bonanza.
