Melbourne Vixen players threw a hen party for Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda on Friday night in Melbourne ahead of her September 24 wedding to Wanangwa Mbwana.

The wedding is set for St Columba CCAP in Blantyre, followed by a reception at Mount Soche Hotel.

One of the Australia Suncorp Netball Super League side’s top players Emily Mannix said they are excited with the event.

“Mwawi deserves it because she is so special and we just wanted to celebrate with her. We can’t wait for the big day,” Mannix said.

Kumwenda said the party marked the best day of her life.

“I thank my fellow players for organising the party. They are the best. I don’t know how to thank them. They made the best day of my life. These are memories I will never forget. I am speechless. I just love them all. The party was just great. My teammates organised everything for me and I had so much fun,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kumwenda said she would return home on July 20 so that she travels with the Malawi National Netball Team to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

“I am just planning to come back home to travel with the team to the Commonwealth Games. I am still training to keep myself fit,” she said.

Kumwenda is on the list of players called into camp for the Games. She finished her season on July 3 when Vixens lost the Grand Final to West Coast Fever.

As part of their preparations for the Games, the Queens played in two tri-nation tournaments in Blantyre and Cape Town, South Africa, last month.
