Vixens bank on Mwawi Kumwenda

IN FORM— Mwawi

Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens are banking on Malawian netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda to help them maintain their winning run as they take on West Coast Fever in a top-of-the-table clash today.

Vixens are unbeaten in three matches with 12 points and are only second to Fever after scoring 187 goals against 165 while their opponents have netted 229 against 185.

Vixens’ website acknowledged Kumwenda’s absence the last time the two teams locked horns last season.

“Missing Mwai Kumwenda last time we met, the goal shooter will be hoping to maintain her hot form and impose herself against Fever captain Courtney Bruce, who is coming off a strong defensive performance in Round 3.

“The combination of Kumwenda and Kiera Austin impressed in Round 3 while the injection of Rahni Samason into the circle could provide a new dimension to our attack end,” a match preview report reads.

The encounter is expected to be a thriller as both sides vie to keep their unbeaten record alive.

Kumwenda admitted the match would be tough.

“It will be a hard game. But we trained hard for it so that we maintain our winning run. I am excited that we have managed three wins out of three. We are taking each game as it comes and we are hoping for the best,” she said.

Vixens go into the match from a 64-52 triumph over Giants Netball on Saturday.

Kumwenda continued to dazzle with her top form, converting 37 times from 41 attempts.

Vixens Coach Simone McKinnis said she was pleased with her side’s performance.

“I think we did a good job just sticking to our game. Our work rate was good and that’s what it’s about; improvement each week,” McKinnis told
