“Each girl will have the opportunity to complete four edited pieces of writing for publication. In addition to becoming the first female adolescent published authors in Malawi,” Tuchscherer said.

She said that at the end of the camp, the girls will not be the same in that they will have improved their writing skills, increased self-esteem, heightened leadership skills and enriched appreciation for literature and the arts among others.

Tuchscherer further said through the camp, the girls will strength identity as writers as well as expand confidence to write in school programmes.

She said the programme will be facilitated by Chikondi Njawala, who is the VoiceFlame programme coordinator, Lisa Borden, Amherst Writers & Artists facilitator and poet Q. Malewezi.

Some of the activities set to take place during the camp include writing exercises, storytelling, dancing, and singing.

Tuchscherer said VoiceFlame believes writing is a platform for people especially girls and women to tell their stories to the world.

She said her organisation is committed to literacy development as a way to empower women and eliminate discrimination hence leading in writing workshops in the US and Malawi.

The organisation has in the past been working with Jacaranda School for Orphans in the project and also trained 23 teachers so that they are fully certified in the writing project.

“The idea is for people to tell their stories for we believe everyone has a unique story to tell,” she said.

VoiceFlame has in the past published a book titled Ndakuwona whose subtitle is I See You with my heart. This is an anthology of Malawian women and US women.
