The introduction of the country’s first national volleyball league continues to gather pace, with Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) announcing the unveiling of a sponsor on November 19.
Vam Publicity Secretary McGodwin Mangani said the event will mark a turnaround in the game.
“Everything is now in place for us to form a national volleyball league. We will call it Malawi National Volleyball League. We want to find 12 teams for the men’s category and another 12 for the ladies’.
“We will start with 24 teams from each of our regional leagues. These will be selected based on regional qualifiers or log table standings in the regions,” Mangani said.
He said the regional qualifiers will then produce eight teams in the ladies’ and men’s categories for the national volleyball championship.
“We intend to have the championship from November 17 to 20 at Lilongwe Community Centre, Bingu National Stadium and African Bible College. So we can assure the volleyball fraternity that the long wait is finally over,” Mangani said.
He said the national league will also greatly contribute towards formation of both the men’s and ladies’ national teams.
“Ultimately, the objective is to make sure that we leave a mark on the international scene. We want to assemble national teams that will shine at all levels. So this is just the beginning of a process that will bear fruits for all to see,” Mangani said.
