The gods of luck are finally smiling on volleyball in the country as the sport now boasts two full-sponsored national tournaments.
This is a departure from the years when Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) depended on its president, Jappie Mhango, to provide prize money to winning teams.
Vam General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, confirmed that mobile network service provider, Airtel Malawi, will sponsor a national tournament to the tune of K2.5 million.
This will become a second competition after the Raiply Malawi-sponsored national competition to get underway in November.
“We are very grateful to Airtel Malawi for their commitment to volleyball. We met them over the weekend in Lilongwe and we have finalised everything for the tournament to commence on August 26 to 29,” Nkhoma explained.
He said the tournament will be played in Lilongwe with 10 teams in the men’s category and eight in the ladies’ section.
The host, Central Region Volleyball League, will contribute four teams to the men’s category and an equal number to the ladies’ category.
Northern Region Volleyball League will provide three men’s and two ladies’ teams and the same applies to the South.
Prizes for the men’s category are K450,000 for the winner and K250,000 for the runners-up.
The prizes will extend to the third and fourth-placed teams which will pocket K150,000 and K50,000 respectively.
Some K350,000 is for the winning team in the ladies’ category with K210,000 going to the losing finalist.
Teams on third and fourth positions will get K110,000 and K30,000 each respectively. The rest of the teams in the men’s and women’s categories will receive consolations of K15,000 each.
There will also be individual prizes to the most valuable player, best blocker, best receiver, best setter and best spiker.
