The cat is finally out of the bag and it is no longer a hide-and-seek game.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Walter Nyamilandu has come out of the cocoon to express his interest in seeking re-election during elections scheduled for Mzuzu on December 16.
Nyamilandu, who ascended to the Fam presidency in 2004, made the announcement Thursday through a special programme streamed live on his Facebook page.
The declaration ends months of speculation surrounding his future at the country’s football governing body.
The development means Nyamilandu will face Super League of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya, who declared his candidature in Mzuzu on Sunday, having been nominated by three affiliates.
“I, Walter MacMillan Nyamilandu Manda, declare my candidacy for the position of President of the Football Association of Malawi on 16th December 2023. I would like to state clearly that I am seeking re-election for the last time to complete my work as a final term of my presidency with Fam,” Nyamilandu, who won the 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 Fam elections, said.
He highlighted Malawi National Football Team’s round-of-16 Africa Cup of Nations finish as well as Malawi Women’s National Football Team’s.
