Wanderers aim at extending lead

SET FOR REMATCH—Ntopwa and Wanderers

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

TNM Super League leaders Be Forward Wanderers have a chance to extend the lead to seven points if they beat rookies Ntopwa FC in today’s match at Kamuzu Stadium.

Wanderers lead the log table with 36 points from 16 games.

Second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets, who have 32 points from 16 games, are on bye this weekend just like fourth-placed Kamuzu Barracks (KB).

The Lilongwe-based soldiers have 31 points from 18 games.

In their last league match, the Nomads beat KB 1-0 at Civo Stadium whereas Ntopwa shocked Mighty Tigers with a 3-2 comeback at Kamuzu Stadium last weekend.

In the first round, Wanderers defeated Ntopwa 2-0 at the same venue.

But Nomads’ assistant Coach, Oscar Kaunda, said they would want to bounce back quickly after losing 4-3 to Blue Eagles on post-match penalties in the Bingu Ikhome Bonanza last week.

“We just need to be very cautious because Ntopwa are also a good team despite being newcomers in the league. We need maximum points so that we cement our position at the summit of the top,” Kaunda said.

Currently 13th on the log table with 17 points from 18 games, Ntopwa are a side capable of springing a surprise.

The Bangwe-based team shocked Moyale 4-1 in their last match of the league’s first round.

Moyale went on to beat Wanderers 3-2 the following day.

Ntopwa Coach, Trevor Kajawa, believes they have the qualities to stop any team in the league.

“Our aim is to remain in the Super League and we are doing everything to ensure that we achieve this. We might be underdogs on paper but we can pull a shocker,” Kajawa said.

Ntopwa may be playing in the elite league for the first time but have several experienced players such as Rafiq Mussa, Raquub Milanzi, Richard Chimbamba and Davie Banda.

Left back Kingsley Beni and left winger Josiah Duwa, who is the team’s top goal scorer with four goals, are back from suspension and could prove vital to Ntopwa’s chances of succes.

But the rookies will be without Levison Makoko who is on suspension.

The Nomads will rely on leading Super League goal scorer Babatunde Adepoju, Francis Mkonda, Isaac Kaliati and Felix Zulu.

In other matches lined up for this afternoon,Civil Sporting Club host Tigers at Civo Stadium whereas Karonga United will be in action against Mzuni at Karonga Stadium.

Action continues tomorrow with Silver Strikers travelling to Chitowe Stadium for a showdown against Dwangwa United whereas Eagles will welcome Tigers at Nankhaka Stadium.

TN Stars will be in action against struggling Masters Security at Kasungu Stadium.
